What to see and do in Espinosa de Cerrato

Espinosa de Cerrato
Village
Espinosa de Cerrato is a village in Palencia with about 119 inhabitants, down from the 862 it had in 1900, situated on the road from Burgos to Roa and crossed by the Franco river, of recognised environmental value. It was granted by Alfonso VIII to Pedro Martínez de Ihobas, who in 1170 ceded it to the abbey of San Miguel de Treviño, and it later belonged to the Merindad and jurisdiction of Palenzuela; in the 18th century it had as many as six hermitages, of which only that of Nuestra Señora del Saúco survives today, whose 16th-century carving is kept in the parish church of San Martín. This devotion has its own jota, the Jota de Nuestra Señora del Sauco, and the village festivals are celebrated in honour of San Martín.
Hermitage of la Virgen del Saúco
Monument
The only survivor of the six hermitages the village had in the eighteenth century; its titular image, a sixteenth-century carving, is today kept in the parish church of San Martín for safekeeping.
