What to see and do in Tordómar

Tordómar
Village
Tordómar is a town in the Arlanza comarca, in Burgos, situated on the right bank of the river. Its symbol is the 23-arch Roman bridge built in the time of Trajan, which carried the road from Clunia towards Cantabria and Astorga; the earliest written reference to the town dates from the 10th century, when Mozarabs arriving from Andalusia repopulated it and gave it the name Torre de Agomar, the origin of Tordómar. It belonged to the alfoz of Escuderos and later to the merindad of Santo Domingo de Silos, with the status of behetría. On its land stood the Mozarabic monastery of Santa María y San Pedro de Valeránica, where the calligrapher Brother Florencio de Valeránica took his vows. Its church holds a chapel of the Carrillo lineage. It today has 290 inhabitants.
The twenty-two-arch bridge over the Arlanza
Monument
Twenty-two arches cross the Arlanza here, and several of them are clearly Roman. The bridge linked Clunia with the roads towards Cantabria, Segovia and Astorga at one of the major crossings of the valley.
The milestones of Trajan and Hadrian
Historical milestone
In 1909 two milestones appeared beside the bridge documenting works on the road under Trajan, between the years 98 and 99, and under Hadrian in 121: the written proof of the Roman antiquity of this crossing of the Arlanza.
