Royuela de Río Franco
Village
Royuela de Río Franco is a town of 169 inhabitants in the Arlanza comarca, in Burgos, on the border with Palencia, mentioned in 1214 as Ruuiola de Francos. It is watered by the Franco river, which, after a seventeen-kilometre course, delivers its flow to the Arlanza next to the Mozarabic church of Santa María de Retortillo. Its origin lies in the early decades of the 10th century, when the first Christian settlers of Gothic stock settled on the left bank of the Arlanza. It belonged to the merindad of Cerrato, the first to head the Libro de las Behetrías, and in 1475 Isabella the Catholic imposed on it a contribution of 14,725 maravedís as part of the general apportionment of the merindad.
