Torrepadre
Village
Torrepadre is a hamlet of 68 inhabitants in the province of Burgos, in Castilla y León, located in the wine-growing area of the Ribera de Arlanza, on the banks of the Arlanza river in its lower course. Its name means tower of Paterno, referring to don Padre, who founded the town and its tower in the first decade of the 10th century, as part of the resettlement process undertaken after the founding of Burgos. The town was a behetría, with the right to choose its protector, a role that usually fell to the House of Aza. On its land is preserved the Mudéjar church of Santa María de Retortillo, one of the most distinctive landmarks of the valley, alongside the settlements of Hontoria de Río Franco and the Retortillo farmstead.
