What to see and do in Valdelugueros

Valdelugueros
Village
Valdelugueros is a municipality in the north of the province of León, in the Cantabrian mountain range, occupying the headwaters and upper course of the Curueño river; its capital is Lugueros, at 1182 meters above sea level. Twelve villages make up the municipality. Along the bed of the Curueño ran a Roman road, known as the Vegarada road after the pass it crossed toward Asturias, with eight Roman bridges still preserved. In 2006, the remains of two men buried 7000 years ago were found in a cave in the municipality, at about 1500 meters above sea level; known as the Men of La Braña, they yielded the first genome of a Mesolithic European, with blue eyes and dark skin. Its economy is based on the primary sector, with tourism playing a growing role. It has 484 inhabitants.
The Roman bridges of the Curueño
Monument
The municipality preserves eight bridges of Roman origin over the Curueño and its tributaries, remodelled in medieval times; among them stands out the one called Puente del Ahorcado, in a valley that still keeps two restored flour mills.
The Mesolithic men of La Braña
Historical milestone
In 2006 the remains of two men buried some seven thousand years ago were found in a cave at La Braña; their DNA later made it possible to reconstruct what the hunter-gatherers of the European Mesolithic were like.
