What to see and do in Puebla de Lillo

Puebla de Lillo
Village
Puebla de Lillo, called Pola de Lillo in Leonese, is a municipality in the Montaña de Riaño region, in the province of León, situated in the Porma valley, with the Susarón peak as its highest point, at 1,878 metres. It is home to the Isoba glacial lake and the San Isidro ski resort, and its territory forms part of the Montaña de Riaño y Mampodre regional park. It shelters the Villaoscura pine forest, with millennia-old pines of European renown, and its 14th-century cylindrical tower, built by the counts of Luna, now houses the Casa del Parque. It holds the traditional pig slaughter in autumn and its festivities, in honour of the Virgen de las Nieves, on 4, 5 and 6 August. It has around 641 inhabitants.
Tower of Puebla de Lillo
Monument
A fourteenth-century cylindrical tower with an internal diameter of eight metres that served in turn as watchtower, jail and town hall, and which remains the most recognisable building in the town centre.
Church of San Vicente de Puebla de Lillo
Monument
A sixteenth-century Renaissance church with vaults of Hispano-Flemish tradition; its fabric preserves a sundial carved by the master stonemason Fernando Compostizo, an unusual signature in the León mountains.
Pine forest of Lillo
Nature
A hundred and sixty hectares of Scots pine with thousand-year-old specimens at the spot known as Villaoscura, the westernmost stand of this kind on the Iberian peninsula and a survivor of a failed public auction in 1870.
Resettlement charter of Alfonso IX
Historical milestone
In 1212 Alfonso IX granted Lillo a charter of repopulation and in 1379 a royal privilege exempted its residents from tolls and taxes, two documents that explain the historic autonomy of this high mountain council.
