Historical milestone
In this village in the mountains of León, home today to a hundred and twenty people, Sinesio Baudilio García Fernández was born in 1897, known as Diego Abad de Santillán, an anarchist militant, writer and publisher, a leading figure of anarcho-syndicalism in Spain and Argentina until his death in Barcelona in 1983. He emigrated to Argentina as a child, where he worked as a labourer and railwayman; back in Spain he studied Philosophy and Letters in Madrid, was imprisoned after the general strike of 1917 and there grew close to the anarchist labour movement. He returned to Argentina, where he edited the newspaper La Protesta, and after several trips through Europe and America he settled in Barcelona in 1933, joining the Iberian Anarchist Federation.
