What to see and do in Boñar

Boñar
Village
Boñar is a town in the province of León, on the banks of the río Porma, whose reservoir shares its name with the municipality. Part of its territory is included in the Montaña de Riaño y Mampodre regional park, on the southern foothills of the Picos de Europa, a protected area home to species such as the vulture, eagle, deer, wolf, bear and capercaillie. The municipality groups together nineteen population entities, three of them minor local entities with their own government: Orones, Rucayo and Valdehuesa. It is the main entry point from the plateau to the San Isidro ski resort, and has a railway station on the La Robla–Bilbao line. Its emblematic tree, El Negrillón, was felled on 5 January 2016 after falling ill with Dutch elm disease. It has around 1,730 inhabitants.
The Negrillón of Boñar (black elm)
Nature
A monumental elm that was for centuries the symbol of the town and under which the council met; sick with Dutch elm disease, it collapsed on 5 January 2016 after holding out for whole generations in the village square.
Church of San Pedro de Boñar y El Maragato
Monument
Built in the seventeenth century, it received in 1861 a clock given by the Marquis of Astorga; it is accompanied by El Maragato, a wooden figure carved by the carpenter Desiderio Cañón that mimics ringing the bells on the hour.
Nicanores of Boñar (pastry)
Food and drink
Extremely fine, crisp puff pastries dusted with sugar that are the town's signature sweet; they share the table with the tarta de truchas and the cravates, the traditional pastries of the Porma valley. They were created in 1880, when the pastry-maker Nicanor Rodríguez González opened a workshop in Boñar and began making these sweets of puff pastry, wheat flour, butter and egg, cut with a daisy-shaped mould. At first they were called hojaldras, but the fame they achieved meant that over time they came to be known as nicanores, in honour of their creator.
