What to see and do in Vegacervera

Vegacervera
Village
Vegacervera is a municipality in the mountains of León that divides its 246 inhabitants among five small settlements: Vegacervera, the capital, with 109 residents, Coladilla, Valle de Vegacervera, Villar del Puerto and Valporquero de Torío. It sits at 1,038 meters above sea level across just 34.89 square kilometers, crossed by the Torío river, which the village spans with a bridge and which has carved out the Vegacervera gorges within its boundaries. The same basin holds the Valporquero cave, the great tourist cavern of the mountains of León.
Cave of Valporquero
Nature
The cave of Valporquero is located in the north of the province of León, next to the village of Valporquero de Torío, in the municipality of Vegacervera, 47 kilometres from the provincial capital. Managed by the Diputación de León, it opened to the public in 1966 and offers a route of one thousand three hundred metres through six chambers of increasing complexity, from the one known as the Hall of the Little Wonders to the final Hall of the Wonders, with an underground lake and eccentric formations; it maintains seven degrees and 99% humidity all year round. In 2016, to mark the fiftieth anniversary of its opening, it hosted an exhibition of León craftspeople, an underground photography workshop, exhibitions of fossils and minerals, and a choral concert, the first ever held inside it.

Nature
The Hoces de Vegacervera natural area, designated on 10 May 1991, extends across the municipalities of Cármenes, Matallana de Torío, Valdepiélago and Vegacervera, in the north of the province of León. The Torío river has carved a canyon in the Paleozoic limestone about 500 metres deep and no more than 15 metres wide at its base, with giant's kettles, sinkholes, dolines and swallow holes typical of an intense karst process; its finest example is the Valporquero cave, whose first level, crossed by an underground river, can be visited and displays stalactites, stalagmites, columns and flowstone. Oak and beech woods grow on the slopes, with willows and poplars on the valley floor, and among its fauna the wolf and the Pyrenean desman stand out.

Activity
Beneath the tourist route runs an underground river that is descended by canyoning with specific equipment; in 2019 the activity received a national award for the best active tourism product in Spain.
