What to see and do in Matallana de Torío

Matallana de Torío
Village
Matallana de Torío is a municipality in the province of León whose main settlement, with the town hall in the Estación quarter, groups together nine villages, among them Orzonaga, Pardavé, Robledo de Fenar and Villalfeide. It is crossed by the río Torío, a tributary of the Bernesga, which about 7 kilometres from the capital has carved the karst landscape of the Hoces de Vegacervera into Palaeozoic limestone rock. Crossing the river are the San Félix bridge, of medieval origin, and the Serrilla bridge, from the 19th century, a structure built for the old road that today remains in use as a footpath. The population is concentrated in the Estación quarter, which had a rail link with León, La Robla and Bilbao and today retains its connection to León via Cercanías commuter trains. It has 1,214 inhabitants.
Beech forest of Orzonaga and holm oak wood of Pardavé
Nature
Two woodlands of opposite character coexist in the same municipality: the shaded beech wood of Orzonaga and the Mediterranean holm oak wood of Pardavé, a contrast that reflects the hinge position of the Torío valley.
Bridge of San Félix
Monument
A bridge of medieval origin over the Torío that coexists in the municipality with that of Serrilla, of the nineteenth century, and with a metal lattice bridge built for the narrow-gauge coal railway.
