What to see and do in Posada de Valdeón

Posada de Valdeón
Village
Posada de Valdeón is the capital of the Valdeón valley, in the heart of the Picos de Europa, wedged between the western and central massifs and crossed from south to north by the río Cares. The municipality groups together around 390 inhabitants in eight villages, among them Caín de Valdeón, from where the Cares route sets out towards Poncebos, in Asturias, and where Torre Cerredo stands, the highest point of the Picos de Europa. Part of its territory was already included in 1918 in Spain's first national park, that of the mountain of Covadonga. Its parish church, dedicated to Santa Eulalia, is documented since 1098 and preserves a Romanesque baptismal font with an inscription dated 1158, near a medieval necropolis that marks the site of the former church of San Pedro de Barrejo.
Torre Cerredo
Monument
At 2650 metres it is the highest peak in Asturias, in Castile and León and in the whole Cantabrian range, and it marks the boundary between the two regions within the Central Massif of the Picos de Europa, also called the Urrieles massif. From its summit, with a drop of more than 2200 metres above the río Cares, it commands views of the Western Massif and the gullies that run down to the Cares gorge. It was first climbed on 30 July 1892 by Aymar d'Arlot de Saint-Saud, Paul Labrouche, Luis Suárez and François Salles; the easiest route, graded not very difficult, starts from the Jou de Cerredo and requires no climbing gear except on a final short stretch of easy scrambling. It rises above the valley of Valdeón, one of the two León gateways to the national park.
Trail of el Cares desde Caín
Activity
The most walked path in the Picos de Europa starts at Caín de Valdeón and climbs the gorge of the river Cares towards Asturias along a way carved into the vertical wall for the maintenance of a hydroelectric channel.
Church of Santa Eulalia de Posada de Valdeón
Monument
The valley's parish church is documented since 1098 and is the religious head of the seven villages of Valdeón, a council that remained enclosed between the massifs of the national park until the modern roads were opened.
Cheese of Valdeón
Food and drink
Queso de Valdeón is a blue cheese made in Posada de Valdeón, in the León valley of the same name, whose production dates back to pre-Roman times, when it was made with goat's milk; during the 19th century it was one of the main occupations of the area. The natural barriers that enclose the valley create a microclimate favouring the microbial flora characteristic of these cheeses. Protected by a protected geographical indication, it is made from cow's, goat's or sheep's milk or blends of these, with an intense flavour and a soft, pale yellow paste. It ripens in caves and is presented wrapped in natural leaf, in cylindrical pieces of between 420 grams and three kilos, related to other blue cheeses of the Picos de Europa such as cabrales.
