What to see and do in Onís

Onís
Village
Onís is a concejo of the Principality of Asturias, in the very heart of the Picos de Europa, bordering Llanes, León, Cabrales and Cangas de Onís, a municipality with which it should not be confused despite sharing an origin. Its capital, Benia, sits at 207 metres in the valley formed by the Güeña river, a tributary of the Sella; to the south rises the limestone massif of Cornión, where the Verdilluenga peak reaches 2,229 metres, the highest point in the concejo, which has around 740 inhabitants. Onís gives its name to Gamonéu cheese, with a designation of origin since 2005, made in the village of Gamonéu, the highest in the municipality; it also preserves the tower of Sirviella, from the 16th century, in the lowest locality of the concejo.
Gamonéu del Puerto cheese
Curiosity
It is smoked over wood in the huts of the high pastures and then matured for between two and five months in natural caves in the Picos de Europa, which leaves it with a mouldy rind and a buttery paste; it is covered by a protected designation of origin.
Cuevona of Avín
Curiosity
A cavity of some five hundred metres run through by the River Chicu and fitted out to explain the last glaciation in the Picos de Europa; it holds the almost complete skeleton of a young Quaternary rhinoceros.
Tower of Sirviella
Monument
A 16th-century civil tower house, three storeys high, with a round-arched doorway of large ashlar blocks, located in the village of Sirviella (Onís), today amid a meadow and near the crossing of two local roads opened at a much more modern time than the tower's construction. Some buildings that depended on it, such as its chapel and a dwelling to the west, have been left isolated, and part of its volume is embedded in the ground because the meadow surrounding it was raised above the original plot. It is an example of vernacular architecture with artistic pretensions that combines elements of various styles, which allows it to be dated to the 16th century, a transition between the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) with monument status in 2004.
Jitu Cave System
Nature
A karst complex of shafts and galleries in the Cornión massif, in the Picos de Europa, between the concejos of Onís and Cabrales, declared a natural monument by Decree 18/2003, of 13 March; it is one of the deepest cave systems explored in Asturias. The upper entrance shaft, near the Vega de Ario refuge, is the third deepest in the Picos de Europa and ranks 38th in the world, with a main pitch of 1,135 metres; its collector ends, more than eleven hundred metres further down, in the Culiembru cave, beside the Cares river. The system has a known length of about ten kilometres, and inside it a new species of millipede, Asturasoma fowleri, has been discovered.
