What to see and do in Boca de Huérgano

Boca de Huérgano
Village
Boca de Huérgano is a municipality in the province of León, in the Montaña de Riaño region, with around 410 inhabitants spread across nine villages —among them Llánaves and Portilla de la Reina— situated at the tail of the Riaño reservoir, only eight kilometres from it, and at 1,111 metres above sea level: one of the two León gateways to the Picos de Europa, via the Valdeón valley. It forms part of the Parque Regional Montaña de Riaño y Mampodre, and several of its villages —Portilla, Barniedo, Los Espejos, Villafrea and Boca de Huérgano itself— mark out the Ruta Vadiniense of the Camino de Santiago del Norte, which many pilgrims take up on arriving from San Vicente de la Barquera. Its population, registered across the nine settlements, grows considerably at weekends and in summer.

Activity
A pilgrim variant linking the Picos de Europa with the Camino Francés which crosses several of the municipality's villages following the Yuso-Esla valley, on one of the loneliest crossings in the north of the peninsula.

Curiosity
Villafrea, Los Espejos, Barniedo and Portilla all carry the surname de la Reina, and with Llánaves, Siero, Valverde de la Sierra and Besande they complete a municipality of 288 square kilometres and a little over four hundred households.
