What to see and do in Burón

Burón
Village
Burón is a municipality of around 280 inhabitants in the Valdeburón valley, within the Parque Regional Montaña de Riaño y Mampodre, situated between Acebedo and Riaño on the shore of the Riaño reservoir. The filling of the reservoir in 1987 destroyed a good part of its traditional settlement, along with the neighbouring villages of Huelde, Éscaro and Riaño among others, and forced the relocation and rebuilding of the parish church and the old schools, today the seat of the town council. Facing the village rises the Yordas or Burín peak, at 1,964 metres, whose beech-wood slopes are habitat for the capercaillie and the brown bear, and from Burón several routes set out through the Montaña de Riaño. Its economy today is based on tourism and hospitality, and it celebrates San Salvador from 5 to 7 August.
Palace of los Gómez de Caso
Monument
A Renaissance manor house of Asturian inspiration that presides over Burón, accompanied by the Allende palace, today dismantled and awaiting relocation, and by the parish church with its spiral stair outside the bell tower.
Yordas Peak
Nature
Limestone peak of 1,967 metres, also called Burín or Borín for its north face, which looks out over the Riaño reservoir and serves as a visual landmark for the whole Valdeburón, between the municipalities of Riaño and Burón. It is one of the most visited peaks of the León mountains, with views as far as the Mampodre massif, the Picos de Europa and the Pico Espigüete. At its foot open the valleys of Mirva and Rabanal, with beech woods and upland pastures where for centuries transhumant merino sheep grazed in summer, leaving sheepfolds now out of use. In 1950 an eight-metre cross was placed on the summit, which the snowfalls brought down that same winter. Among its fauna the chamois, the Iberian ibex, the griffon vulture, the golden eagle and, occasionally, the brown bear and the Iberian wolf stand out.
Charter of the Merindad de Valdeburón
Historical milestone
In 1467 the charter was granted that recognised the autonomy of the Merindad de Valdeburón, a council organisation grouping the villages of the upper Esla that survived until the municipal reform of the nineteenth century.
