What to see and do in Amieva

Amieva
Village
Amieva is an Asturian concejo of the Oriente comarca, with its capital at Sames and barely 590 inhabitants, having lost four out of every five residents since 1900. It is crossed by the río Sella, in whose course the Ponga, which forms fertile valleys with it, and the Dobra, deeply channelled, converge; to the east open the first foothills of the Western Massif of the Picos de Europa, within the national park, with a relief that leaps from 220 metres to 2,478 metres at its summits. The upper part of the Sella preserves remains from the Upper Paleolithic, such as those of the Collubil cave, and the now-vanished Mian dolmen, at Sames, of which only two axes remain in the Archaeological Museum of Oviedo. A medieval document from the León monastery of Sahagún already mentions, in the 10th century, a route linking Amieva with the Meseta.
Viewpoint of Ordiales
Curiosity
Ordiales is a place in the Picos de Europa located in the Cornión massif, administratively within the Asturian municipality of Amieva. At its highest point, on the edge of the Angón valley and with views over the Ponga ridge, lies the Ordiales viewpoint, at 1,691 metres above sea level, known for having held, since 1949, the grave of Pedro Pidal y Bernaldo de Quirós, Marquis of Villaviciosa de Asturias. Besides being a climber and chamois hunter in the Picos, the marquis was the driving force behind the present-day Picos de Europa national park and, together with the shepherd Gregorio Pérez, El Cainejo, the first person to climb the Naranjo de Bulnes.
Archdeacon's Trail
Activity
An old bridleway between Asturias and the meseta, documented as early as the 10th century; it owes its name to Pedro Díaz de Oseja, archdeacon of Villaviciosa, who in the 18th century left funds to repair it. It covers 27.5 kilometres as far as El Pontón.
Toneyu cave system
Nature
A karst system with nineteen kilometres of surveyed passages open in the sierra de Beza, the only one in the Picos de Europa that drains toward the Sella; it was declared a natural monument by Decree 19/2003, of 13 March. It is a network of caves that separates the basins of the Cares and Sella rivers, with three entrances and a complex layout of galleries; although it does not reach the depth of chasms such as Torca Urriellu, its greatest drop is 600 metres.
