What to see and do in Oseja de Sajambre

Oseja de Sajambre
Village
Oseja de Sajambre, in Leonese Oseya Sayambre, is a municipality in the region of La Montaña de Riaño, in the province of León, with around 215 inhabitants who live chiefly from livestock farming. Although it belongs to León, it lies north of the Cantabrian mountain range, within the Picos de Europa national park, and its waters flow to the Cantabrian Sea: at the Fuente del Infierno the río Sella rises, carving the Beyos gorge on its way to Asturias until it reaches the sea at Ribadesella. It was the medieval capital of the concejo of Sayambre, which grouped together five villages, among them the hamlets of Pío, Vierdes, Ribota and Soto de Sajambre. Its church, dedicated to Santa María, was dependent on the monastery of Sahagún, and its patronal festivities, for Nuestra Señora and San Roque, are held on 15 and 16 August.
Gorge of los Beyos
Nature
The gorge or ravine of Los Beyos, carved by the río Sella through the limestone of the Cantabrian range, closes off the municipality of Oseja de Sajambre to the north and marks the natural passage between the Sajambre valley and Asturias. Its name comes from «beyu», a local word for gorges and ravines. It has a total length of about 20 kilometres, of which 11 -between Ceneya and Cobarcil- form the gorge proper, with almost vertical walls through which the river and the N-625 road barely pass; the stretch begins at the site of Covarcil, within the municipal boundary, and extends to the bridge of Angoyo, where the province of Asturias begins.
Palace of los Piñán de Cueto Luengo
Monument
A rural manor house raised between 1621 and 1639, the oldest civil building preserved in the Sajambre valley; to it were added the Casa del Conde, of the fifteenth century, and La Torre, of the late fourteenth.
Source of the Sella river
Nature
The Sella rises at the Fuente del Infierno, within the municipal boundary of Oseja de Sajambre (León), though its true source lies at the site of Junseya; from here it runs 66 kilometres before reaching the Cantabrian Sea, forming the ría of Ribadesella, after carving the gorge of Los Beyos and serving as the boundary between several Asturian concejos. The Count of Saint-Saud described the rocky amphitheatre of its headwaters, dominated by peaks such as the Pozúa, at 1,923 metres, and the Pico Jario, at 1,908, as «a vast circular basin with a rocky cone majestically placed at its centre». Downstream, between Arriondas and Ribadesella, the Descenso Internacional del Sella has been held since 1930, a canoeing event that gathers a great popular festival every August.
