What to see and do in Santa Colomba de Curueño

Santa Colomba de Curueño
Village
Santa Colomba de Curueño is a municipality in the region of La Montaña de Riaño, in the province of León, in the narrow valley formed by the final stretch of the río Curueño before it joins the Porma; it groups together eight settlements —among them Ambasaguas, Barrillos and Gallegos— and has around 500 inhabitants in total. There is evidence of settlement since the 10th century, with the Castillo de San Salvador standing on the hill facing the village; in the late Middle Ages the Concejo del Valle del Curueño was part of the lordship of the Guzmán family. Its church, Baroque with Romanesque and Gothic elements, and the 17th-century chapel of the Santo Cristo, are the focus of the main festival on 14 September, while the pilgrimage to the chapel of Santa Ana, on 26 July, with the village climbing in procession with its banner, is the chief festive attraction.
Church of Santa Colomba de Curueño
Monument
Described as a Baroque jewel that incorporates earlier Romanesque and Gothic pieces, it presides over a valley where the castle of San Salvador, the seventeenth-century hermitage of the Santo Cristo and the sixteenth-century one of Santa Ana are also preserved.
First mention of Ambasaguas de Curueño
Historical milestone
A document of the year 959 mentions Ambasaguas, the first written evidence of settlement in this valley; Santa Colomba does not appear until 1159 and in the following centuries there was a Templar presence here and one of the Order of Alcántara.
