What to see and do in Palacios de la Valduerna

Palacios de la Valduerna
Village
Palacios de la Valduerna is a town of about 340 inhabitants in the valley of the río Duerna, in the province of León, the historic capital of the comarca of La Valduerna, whose municipal area also includes the town of Ribas de la Valduerna. Its origin lies in the residence built by King Alfonso V of León, from which the original town of Palacios del Rey arose; at the end of the 14th century, Henry II of Castile granted the lordship of La Valduerna to the Bazán family, based in Palacios, although the rise of La Bañeza, freed from its jurisdiction in 1523, brought about its decline. It preserves part of the wall and the tower of the Bazán castle, from the 14th and 15th centuries. In early August it celebrates the Day of La Valduerna, with a parade of pendones.
Castle of los Bazán
Monument
A fortress of the 14th or 15th centuries raised on a height overlooking the Duerna valley, with four cubic towers on an irregular trapezoid of some six hundred square metres. It has been under state protection since the decree of 22 April 1949.
Floodplain of the Peces and Duerna rivers
Nature
On the riverbanks, besides the planted poplar groves, grow white poplars, willows and alders, and their waters support brown trout, bordallo, barbel and lamprehuela, along with the otter. In the scrubland roe deer, fox and, occasionally, the wolf appear.
Lordship of the Valduerna granted to the Bazán family
Historical milestone
Enrique II of Castile granted the Bazán family the lordship of the valley, with its seat in this town. A century later its lords received the title of viscount over twenty-eight places, the moment of the comarca's greatest power.
Assault on the town of Palacios
Historical milestone
Armed men from Astorga, with the approval of the Osorio family, destroyed the wall of rammed earth and river cobbles and entered the town. A ruling of 1454 had already obliged the surrounding villages to repair that tower and that wall.
Wines of the Tierra de León Designation of Origin
Food and drink
The municipality lies within the area covered by this designation of origin, protected since 2007, whose reds and rosés are made mainly from the native prieto picudo grape in the lands of the south of the province.
Cecina de León and suckling lamb of the Valduerna
Food and drink
The comarca produces two meats with a protected geographical indication: cecina de León, cured beef, covered since 1994, and lechazo de Castilla y León, recognised since 1997 and roasted in a wood-fired oven.
