What to see and do in Villamontán de la Valduerna

Villamontán de la Valduerna
Village
Villamontán de la Valduerna is a municipality of about 680 inhabitants at 820 metres in the valley of La Valduerna, 46 km south-west of León, which brings together seven villages: Fresno, Miñambres, Posada, Redelga and Villalís de la Valduerna, in addition to the capital. Through its territory passed the Roman road that linked the mansio of Argentiolum — which towards the end of the 2nd century reached the rank of city — with Astorga, crossing a Roman bridge whose location has not been found; recent surveys place the mansio south of the present-day settlement, next to several marching camps. On a façade next to the road a coat of arms is preserved, bearing a helmet and five fleurs-de-lis. Its church, of some merit, owes part of its fabric to the Gothic period. The patron saint, Santa Águeda, is celebrated on 5 February.
