What to see and do in Villazala

Villazala
Village
Villazala is a municipality of about 560 inhabitants beside the Órbigo river, in the province of León, made up of six villages, among them Huerga de Frailes, near whose centre a Roman marching camp was found, probably linked to the Cantabrian Wars. The town is documented as early as 1118, and in the 15th century it was the head of one of the jurisdictions of the lordship of the Marquis of Astorga, which grouped some ten villages of the Ribera del Órbigo and the León páramo, although it lost weight to La Bañeza from the 16th century onward. From the 14th century it had some irrigation thanks to the historic Presa Cerrajera, and in the 1950s the construction of the Luna reservoir allowed irrigation to be expanded with new canals, among them the Castañón channel, inaugurated in 1969.

Nature
A strip of riverside groves and alluvial land where the bank of the Órbigo meets the edge of the moorland. It is the landscape that explains the settlement of the municipality by Mozarabs and people from Omaña during the centuries of the resettlement.
