What to see and do in Riego de la Vega

Riego de la Vega
Village
Riego de la Vega is a municipality of León of about 700 inhabitants made up of six settlements — Riego de la Vega itself, Villarnera, San Félix, Toralino de la Vega, Toral de Fondo and Castrotierra de la Valduerna — in the comarca of the Vega del Tuerto. It is spread between the valley of the Tuerto, at around 806 metres, and hills to the south that reach 892 metres at the Cuesta Grande hill; the río de los Peces and the Duerna water the southern meadow, and the Tuerto feeds irrigation channels. It lives off dry-farmed cereal and, in the vegas, off sugar beet, beans, potatoes and maize. The main settlement preserves its medieval layout around the church of Santa María. Its Vía de la Plata industrial estate, created in 1985, is home to food, automotive and furniture companies.
Shrine of la Virgen de Castrotierra
Monument
A hermitage in the outlying village of Castrotierra de la Valduerna which holds an image of the Virgin venerated throughout the diocese. In years of drought the carving is carried in supplication to Astorga cathedral, some seventeen kilometres away.

Nature
The district is arranged in three levels: the valley irrigated by canals to the north, the hills rising to the 892 metres of the Cuesta Grande, and the meadowland to the south, at some 810 metres, watered by the rivers Peces and Duerna.

Food and drink
Wheat and barley are sown on the dry land, but it is the irrigated flood plains that give the produce that reaches the table: beans, potatoes, sugar beet and maize, grown on family holdings with water from canals and channels.
