What to see and do in Villademor de la Vega

Villademor de la Vega
Village
Villademor de la Vega is a village of about 290 inhabitants on flat ground beside the río Esla, amid poplar groves and irrigated land, in the historic comarca of the Vega de Toral, province of León. Its name, documented since the year 926 as Villam de Amor, evolved over the centuries until it settled in 1757 as Villademor de la Vega. In 1128 King Alfonso VII granted the village rights of irrigation, mill construction and the use of pastures, confirmed by Ferdinand II in 1161, and it belonged to the Condado de Valencia de Don Juan, with a parish dependent on the diocese of Oviedo until 1955. It preserves the church of San Pedro Apóstol, with a Mudéjar tower, beside which stands a 17th-century pillory of justice declared a conjunto histórico-artístico (a Spanish heritage-protection category) in 1963.
