What to see and do in Villamañán

Villamañán
Village
Villamañán is a town in the Páramo Leonés comarca, in the province of León, near Valencia de Don Juan, situated at 787 metres above sea level between the vega of the Esla river and the higher plain of the páramo. Its name, formerly Villamagna, may also derive from the Arabic Villamannan, on account of the area's numerous springs. In the clay hills known as Oteros, typical of the local landscape, wine cellars were traditionally dug. With about 1,085 inhabitants, it preserves arcaded squares from its old market and a 17th-century church with a large tower; its Fiestas de la Zarza open September amid peñas and Prieto Picudo wine.
Parish church of Villacé
Monument
The church of the village of Villacé, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 30 September 2008, one of the few monuments with that protection in the lower Esla flood plain. It stands in a settlement of mud, adobe and rammed earth architecture.
Bridge of los veinte ojos
Monument
A brick bridge on the old N-630 road known for the number of its arches. It is an uncommon example of a public work built with the same fired clay as the houses and cellars of the comarca.
