What to see and do in Toral de los Guzmanes

Toral de los Guzmanes
Village
Toral de los Guzmanes is a town of about 485 inhabitants situated in the vega of the Esla river, in León territory, first documented in the 10th century; within its municipal area lay the Templar commandery of Villapalmaz. In the 13th century it was the lordship of Juan Ramírez de León and his wife María García de Toledo, and later passed to the House of Guzmán, which received the title of Marquises of Toral. Its farming and livestock economy is rounded out by the old cellars dug into the hillside that separates the vega from the Páramo Leonés, where vineyards were grown until a few decades ago. The Palacio de los Guzmanes, of limewashed rammed earth on a stone base, housed the Catholic Monarchs from 15 to 17 August 1487 and today holds a botijo museum.
Toral floodplain and the Esla canal
Nature
A fertile plain hollowed out over millennia by the River Esla, closed off to the west by the stony slope that separates it from the Páramo. In the 19th century the Esla canal was opened here, with a fall that first drove a mill and later an electric turbine.

Historical milestone
On a knoll near the Esla stood the Templar bailiwick of Villapalmaz, dependent on the Oviedo vicarage of Valencia de Don Juan. In that same century the town was a lordship of Juan Ramírez de León, mayor of the city.
