What to see and do in Noceda del Bierzo

Noceda del Bierzo
Village
Noceda del Bierzo is a municipality of about 600 inhabitants in the León comarca of El Bierzo, crossed by the río Noceda, a tributary of the Boeza, whose name comes from the Latin nucetum, 'a place planted with walnut trees'. The first records of settlement date from the Bronze Age, the era of the Ídolo de Noceda, found nearby and today held in the Museo Arqueológico Nacional. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the monastery of San Isidoro de León until 1063, when Fernando I handed it to the bishop of Astorga for having contributed to the transfer of the remains of Saint Isidore of Seville. During the Peninsular War, the Junta Suprema de León, with General Luis de Sosa, set its provisional seat here, meeting on 3 January 1809. Situated at 831 metres of altitude, it preserves a 17th-century parish church with three naves.
Idol of Noceda
Curiosity
The Idol of Noceda is a curious stone piece found near Noceda del Bierzo, where for decades it served as a loom weight in the home of a local woman, Laura Marqués, until in the 1960s her daughter showed it to her teacher and its true archaeological value was revealed. It is estimated to be around four thousand years old, placing it in the Bronze Age. It shows male and female anthropomorphic features and a perforation for hanging it, characteristic of the idols that most experts link to the cult of the so-called eye goddess. The piece is not kept in the region: since 1971 it has been held at the National Archaeological Museum, although replicas can be seen at the Museum of El Bierzo, in Ponferrada, and at the Noceda Museum.
Trail of los Molinos de Noceda
Activity
A trail linking the old flour mills on the River Noceda, among them those of Fundeiru, Ampueru and El Medio, restored and open to the public. The route is completed by the village's communal oven, still in use beside the church.
