What to see and do in Palacios del Sil

Palacios del Sil
Village
Palacios del Sil is a municipality in the province of León located at the head of the río Sil, whose territory largely coincides with the traditional comarca of Ribas del Sil and which has also, since 2005, been part of the Consejo Comarcal del Bierzo. It is one of the bilingual municipalities of León, where the Leonese speech is still preserved alongside Spanish. Besides the main town, it comprises the villages of Corbón del Sil, Cuevas del Sil, Matalavilla, Mataotero, Salientes, Susañe del Sil, Tejedo del Sil, Valdeprado, Valseco and Villarino del Sil, with a relief ranging from the 800 metres of the valley floors to over 2,000 metres on its peaks, such as the Peña Catoute. The first human traces date from Roman times; in 1225 Alfonso IX granted it its own fuero. It has about 860 inhabitants.
Charter of Ribas del Sil
Historical milestone
In 1225 Alfonso IX of León granted its own fuero (charter of local law) to the council, then called Riba de Sil. The district survived throughout the Early Modern period as the concejo of Ribas del Sil de Arriba, within the province of León.
