What to see and do in Peranzanes

Peranzanes
Village
Peranzanes occupies the valley of Fornela, in León's El Bierzo, crossed by the río Cúa; it is one of the municipalities where a variety of Leonese in transition with Galician is still spoken. The castro de Chano, an Astur settlement inhabited between the 1st century BC and the mid-1st century, with circular buildings in the manner of pallozas, bears witness to the pre-Roman occupation of the valley; in its first excavation, in the 1990s, the so-called Tesorillo del Chano appeared. The founding of Peranzanes and the other settlements goes back to the Middle Ages, when they were integrated into the kingdom of León. With about 275 inhabitants, every August the dances in honour of the Virgen are danced in Trascastro, a tradition of more than five centuries.
Fornela Valley and the source of the Cúa
Nature
A valley with a strong character of its own within the protected area of the Sierra de Ancares, run through by the River Cúa, which rises at the spot known as El Cuadro. Bog cottongrass grows on its waterlogged meadows and capercaillie and wolf survive in its woods.
