What to see and do in Murias de Paredes

Murias de Paredes
Village
Murias de Paredes is the historic capital of the Omaña comarca, in the province of León, on the upper stretch of the river of the same name, in the Leonese Western Mountain. Its municipal area brings together, besides the capital, fourteen settlements spread across three valleys formed during the Hercynian folding. The councils that made it up were under the jurisdiction of the Counts of Luna from the 15th century until the abolition of the manorial estates in the 19th, when the municipality was constituted; it was the seat of a judicial district between 1834 and 1965. Depopulated since the early 20th century by emigration, today it lives on agriculture, forestry, livestock farming and a growing rural tourism. It preserves the church of San Juan Bautista and a stately house bearing the Quiñones coat of arms, and has 337 inhabitants.
Church of San Juan Bautista de Murias de Paredes
Monument
The parish church of the capital of Omaña, head of a municipality that spreads fifteen villages between the Omaña valley, the Valle Gordo and the Valle Chico, on the southern slope of the Cantabrian range.
Hermitage of Barrio de la Puente
Monument
Dated 1756 and decorated with a carved coat of arms above the doorway, it is one of several hermitages dotting the municipality, along with that of El Carmen at Murias de Paredes and that of Santiago in the settlement of Fasgar.
Pre-Romanesque hermitage of the Puerto de la Magdalena
Monument
At the top of the Magdalena pass are preserved the remains of a hermitage of pre-Romanesque construction that still holds fragments of wall painting, a rarity in the religious architecture of the Omaña mountains.
Emblazoned manor house of the Quiñones family
Monument
The ancestral house of the Quiñones family at Murias de Paredes, with a coat of arms carved on the front and an ashlar gateway; it was rehabilitated in 2012 after years of neglect and is the valley's finest example of seigneurial architecture.
Birch forests of Montrondo
Nature
The birch woods surrounding Montrondo are among the best preserved in the province of León; they occupy shaded slopes beneath summits such as the Tambarón, at 2,102 metres, and the Alto de la Cañada, at 2,154.
La Zafarronada de Omaña
Curiosity
A winter masquerade held before Lent in which the zafarrones go through the village with masks, cowbells and costumes of vegetation; it survives alongside other Omaña customs such as the filandón, the calecho and León bowls.
The samartino of Omaña (pig slaughter)
Food and drink
The pig slaughter, called samartino here, still marks the November calendar in the valley's villages and supplies with chorizo, blood sausage and marinated cuts the larder that must last until the following summer.
