Igüeña
Village
Igüeña is a municipality in León in the comarca of El Bierzo, with about 1,012 inhabitants spread between the main town and seven hamlets. Astures and Romans left several hillforts on its land, such as those of Quintana de Fuseros, linked to mining, and the río Tremor still preserves channels from ancient Roman gold workings. Farming and livestock dominated its economy until, in the early 20th century, coal mining arrived, bringing great demographic growth in the 1960s, and its later crisis has marked the life of the municipality; today only the companies Alto Bierzo and Uminsa remain active. Colinas del Campo de Martín Moro Toledano, a hamlet of stone with wooden galleries, has been declared a conjunto histórico (a Spanish heritage-protection category for historic sites) since 1994. The most populous locality is Tremor de Arriba.
Colinas del Campo de Martín Moro Toledano
Monument
A village of slate and wood with cobbled streets and continuous balconies, nestled in the sierra de Gistredo, in the municipality of Igüeña. Its old quarter was declared a conjunto histórico (a protected historic ensemble under Spanish heritage law) on 10 November 1994, and its name is among the longest administrative place names in Spain and the longest in the province of León. It traditionally lived on rye and vegetable-garden farming and on livestock, and today its population, mostly retired, doubles in summer and at weekends with the arrival of rural-tourism houses and hikers, many on their way up the Catoute. Its patron saint festivals are Santa Dorotea, on 6 February, and San Juan, on 24 June, moved to the nearest weekends.
