Folgoso de la Ribera
Village
Folgoso de la Ribera is a municipality in León of about 970 inhabitants, spread across seven localities in the valley of the río Boeza, among them Boeza and Rozuelo, in the comarca of El Bierzo. The relief, between the 700 metres of the valley and the 1,245 metres of the pico de Lleras, in the transition between the Montes de León and the sierra de Gistredo, holds vestiges of the Bronze Age and of the later Astur hillfort culture, with settlements such as La Gandara or the castro de Colmenales. The territory came under Roman rule after the conquest of Castro Bergidum and the Astur defeat in the Cantabrian Wars. Its 20th century was shaped by coal mining, linked to the Fundación Santa Bárbara and to now-closed workings such as the Minas de Valdeloso, and in Boeza the game of gandusa is still played.
