What to see and do in Castropodame

Castropodame
Village
Castropodame is a municipality in the comarca of El Bierzo, in the province of León, one of those that preserve the Leonese language, with about 1,570 inhabitants at 747 metres of altitude; it also includes the settlements of Calamocos, Matachana, San Pedro Castañero, Turienzo Castañero, Viloria and Villaverde de los Cestos. It received its own fueros from Alfonso IX on 14 June 1188. In Roman times the territory was worked by gold mines, of which hillforts, caves, galleries and the lake of the Encinal still remain, formed with the waters used to tear down the hillside by means of the ruina montium technique, similar to that used at Las Médulas. Its church of Santa Colomba dates from the 16th century.
Charter of Castropodame
Historical milestone
Alfonso IX of León granted the town its own charter as soon as his reign began, recording it in the document with the spelling Castor podiamo. The first written mention of the place is earlier still and goes back to the year 970.
