What to see and do in Torre del Bierzo

Torre del Bierzo
Village
Torre del Bierzo is a municipality of about 1,900 inhabitants in the province of León, in the comarca of El Bierzo Alto, situated between the valley of the río Boeza, to the northwest, where Albares de la Ribera lies, and that of the río Tremor, on which the town centre sits at 728 metres above sea level; the two valleys are separated by the Montes de León. The earliest human traces date back to prehistory, with petroglyphs found at Santa Marina de Torre, and to pre-Roman times, with Astur hillfort settlements such as that of Las Torcas, near Albares. In the municipality, on 3 January 1944, a collision in the railway tunnel caused between 200 and 500 deaths, and over the río Tremor a bridge of Roman origin still stands.
