What to see and do in Molinaseca

Molinaseca
Village
Molinaseca is a town of León's El Bierzo, in the Bierzo Alto, with about 870 inhabitants; its old town has been a conjunto histórico-artístico (a Spanish heritage-protection category for historic sites) since 1975 and has featured, since 2021, among the most beautiful villages in Spain. Already in Roman times there was a mining centre here, but its development is linked to the puente de los Peregrinos, of Romanesque design and seven arches over the río Meruelo, through which the Camino Francés enters the village up to the old stone wayside cross that closes off its historic part. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the kingdom of León under Alfonso VI, its first lord being Count Ramiro Froilaz; from that time date its first hermitages, dedicated to Nuestra Señora de las Angustias, Santa Marina, el Hospital and San Roque. In 1809 it hosted the seat of the Junta Superior de León.
Bridge of los Peregrinos de Molinaseca
Monument
A seven-arched bridge of Romanesque design over the River Meruelo by which the Camino Francés enters the town. The settlement that grew up beside it was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection), as the Villa de Molinaseca, on 6 September 2021.
Festival of el Agua de Molinaseca
Activity
A summer celebration in which residents and pilgrims soak one another with buckets through the streets of the old town, beside the still water of the River Meruelo. It is a declared festival of provincial tourist interest and the best attended date in the local calendar.
