What to see and do in Barbadillo de Herreros

Barbadillo de Herreros
Village
Barbadillo de Herreros, in the Burgos Sierra de la Demanda, gave its name in the 10th century to the alfoz of Barbadillo, formed by Barbatiello — the village's original name — and the neighbouring towns of Riocavado de la Sierra, Barbadillo del Pez, Monterrubio de la Demanda and Huerta de Arriba, though it was short-lived: in the 11th century it came to depend on the more powerful Alfoz de Lara. The site, beside the Pedroso river and surrounded by forests and minerals, favoured the transhumance of merino sheep, mining and forestry; by 1044 it was already cited as a mining centre, and in 1352 it belonged in lordship to the Velasco family. The revival of an ironworks in 1864 brought demographic growth and a mining railway to Bezares. Today it has 103 inhabitants and celebrates as its main festival the Virgin of Costana.
