Monterrubio de la Demanda
Village
Monterrubio de la Demanda is a hamlet of 55 inhabitants, set on the slope of the Sierra de la Demanda, in the province of Burgos, on the route linking Salas de los Infantes with Nájera, near the border with La Rioja; it stands at over 1,000 meters. Of livestock, agricultural and forestry tradition, it has nearby ancient copper deposits such as Los Hoyos de Veleto, already exploited in Roman times, which gave the village new impetus at the end of the 19th century before closing at the end of the thirties, when the residents dismantled the mining railway that linked it with Villafría. Coats of arms on the façades recall its noble past. Notable are the church of San Juan Bautista, Romanesque with an 18th-century renovation, and the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Caraba, Romanesque, from the 11th century.
The English iron railway
Historical milestone
The Sierra Company Limited obtained in 1896 the concession to lay a narrow-gauge line to bring the iron of these mines down to Burgos. It opened in 1901, proved ruinous, closed around 1910 and was dismantled in 1947.
