Huerta de Arriba
Village
Huerta de Arriba is a municipality of 121 inhabitants in the comarca of Sierra de la Demanda, in the province of Burgos, next to the border with La Rioja and on the foothills of the sierra de la Demanda; it is watered by the Tejero river, which rises within its own territory and pours its waters, via the Pedroso and the Arlanza, toward the Pisuerga and the Duero. The earliest written records of the village date from the resettlement of the early 10th century. Its rise came from transhumant livestock farming: the flocks of sheep enjoyed from 1273 the protection of the Honrado Concejo de la Mesta. It belonged to the jurisdiction of Valdelaguna until 1952, when it became independent as its own municipality. Since 2015 it has hosted the Proyecto Monachus for the reintroduction of the black vulture. At the end of April, its residents raise the May tree.
