Zazuar
Village
Zazuar is a municipality in the comarca of La Ribera, in the province of Burgos, twelve kilometres north-east of Aranda de Duero, with 198 inhabitants. Its name may come from Aza-or, “rocky height” or “on a hill”, and it already appears in an 1177 document signed by Alfonso VIII of Castile, which mentions the archpriest of Sozuuar, identified with present-day Zazuar. Located in the Ribera del Duero, beside the río Arandilla, it preserves an important group of 17th-century bodegas and a rollo de justicia set on a press-stone. Its own dance is the Danza del Milano, a bird of prey common in its hills alongside foxes, roe deer and wild boar, and it celebrates its patron, San Andrés, on 30 November. In the mid-19th century the villa had 428 registered inhabitants, more than double today's number.
