Hontoria de Valdearados
Village
Hontoria de Valdearados is a municipality in the La Ribera comarca, in the province of Burgos, at an altitude of 860 metres, beside the Aranzuelo river. Its name comes from the Latin fons aurea, golden spring, while Valdearados, valley of the ploughs, refers to the resettlement that followed the Reconquest. Recovered by the Kingdom of Castile from the year 912 onward, it withstood the campaigns of Abderramán III and Almanzor; its first written mention is on a parchment of 1029 kept at the Aragonese monastery of San Juan de la Peña. A town exempt from seigneurial rule in the 16th century, it passed in the 18th to the lordship of the counts of Miranda and dukes of Peñaranda. With 152 inhabitants, the ground floor of its Bishop's Palace now houses an ethnographic museum with more than five hundred pieces of traditional rural life.
