What to see and do in La Vid y Barrios

La Vid y Barrios
Village
La Vid y Barrios is a municipality in the Ribera del Duero, in the province of Burgos, 106 km from the capital, made up of Guma, La Vid and Zuzones, the latter being the capital; it totals 237 inhabitants (INE 2025) in the floodplain of the Duero. In La Vid stands the monastery of Santa María, a Premonstratensian house with a long history. In 1895 the Valladolid–Ariza railway gave it its own station, with passenger and freight facilities, closed to passenger traffic in 1985. When the Linares reservoir was built, the old municipal area of Linares del Arroyo, in Segovia, was split between Maderuelo and Montejo de la Vega de la Serrezuela, and its population was relocated to La Vid.
The Monastery of Santa María de La Vid
Monument
Founded in the 12th century on the banks of the Duero, at the place where, according to local tradition, the image of the Virgen de la Vid was found — the Gothic carving venerated today in the church is, however, later — the monastery was born Premonstratensian and today belongs to the Augustinians, who count it among their most important centres in Spain. It preserves a church, a cloister and a library of old holdings open to the friars themselves, to researchers, and to anyone who can show a legitimate interest, upon prior request to the father librarian. It remains inhabited by a religious community, integrated since 2000 into the Augustinian province of San Juan de Sahagún, and is the monumental landmark of the upper Duero in Burgos province.
