What to see and do in Grijalba

Grijalba
Village
Grijalba is a municipality in the province of Burgos, in the Odra-Pisuerga comarca, set on a rise of the countryside that meets the Tierra de Campos, one kilometer from the Odra river. Born with the resettlement of the Reconquest, it already appears in the year 999 in a donation by Count Sancho Garcés to the monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña, and in old documents it figures as Ecclesia Alba, “White Church”. The 1752 Ensenada Cadastre describes it as a town of 71 houses devoted to grain, with three mills working on the Odra. A municipality of 114 inhabitants, it preserves the church of Nuestra Señora de los Reyes, Gothic from the 13th and 14th centuries and declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1983, built over an earlier Romanesque temple.
The church of Nuestra Señora de los Reyes
Monument
The fortified church of Nuestra Señora de los Reyes, in Grijalba (Burgos), was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1983. Built in the 13th century on an earlier temple, perhaps founded by Alfonso VII, it is one of the most notable examples of Spanish rural Gothic and, like other Castilian temples, it was also conceived as a fortress, with a crenellated tower at its foot. It has a Latin-cross plan, three naves and a triple polygonal apse, with ribbed vaults showing the influence of the nearby monastery of las Huelgas and Burgos Cathedral; it houses a 14th-century sculptural group with Santa Ana, the Virgin and the Child, a Romanesque baptismal font and 15th- and 16th-century stained glass, besides the Churrigueresque altarpiece of 1752 and the organ of 1724. The church gives its name to the village: church of the dawn.
