What to see and do in Padilla de Abajo

Padilla de Abajo
Village
Padilla de Abajo is a municipality of 71 inhabitants in the Odra-Pisuerga district, province of Burgos, situated between the Odra and Pisuerga rivers; it was the cradle of the Padilla lineage, from which Queen María de Padilla descended, and in the Libro de las Behetrías it appears included in the Merindad de Castrojeriz. It preserves several milestones nearly two thousand years old, which marked the route of the Roman road linking Astorga with Sasamón, as well as the parish church of los Santos Juanes, with late Gothic and Renaissance elements. The Romanesque hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Torreón, from the 13th century, on the way to Padilla de Arriba, stands out for its apse with carved corbels and a doorway with four archivolts.
