The church of Nuestra Señora de los Reyes Monument · Grijalba, Odra-Pisuerga, Burgos The fortified church of Nuestra Señora de los Reyes, in Grijalba (Burgos), was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1983. Built in the 13th century on an earlier temple, perhaps founded by Alfonso VII, it is one of the most notable examples of Spanish rural Gothic and, like other Castilian temples, it was also conceived as a fortress, with a crenellated tower at its foot. It has a Latin-cross plan, three naves and a triple polygonal apse, with ribbed vaults showing the influence of the nearby monastery of las Huelgas and Burgos Cathedral; it houses a 14th-century sculptural group with Santa Ana, the Virgin and the Child, a Romanesque baptismal font and 15th- and 16th-century stained glass, besides the Churrigueresque altarpiece of 1752 and the organ of 1724. The church gives its name to the village: church of the dawn. Photo: MottaW (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Grijalba
