What to see and do in Trespaderne

Trespaderne
Village
Trespaderne is a town of about 720 inhabitants in the Burgos Merindades comarca, beside the confluence of the Nela and the Ebro, crossed by a Romanesque bridge from the late 12th century. Above it stands the castle of Tedeja, the oldest surviving fortress in Castile, already in use in late Roman and Visigothic times; tradition places Don Pelayo there in the year 712 alongside Don Pedro, Duke of Cantabria, and the two returned to defeat a Muslim army there in the year 726, in the Batalla del Negro Día, between Trespaderne and Cillaperlata, in whose memory the hermitage of Encinillas was raised. The castle closes off the Horadada gorge, cut by the Ebro, in a setting that also takes in the sierra de la Tesla and a hidden valley of thousand-year-old yews.
Castle of Tedeja
Monument
A hilltop fortification above the Ebro considered the oldest of those preserved in Castile, with use documented from Roman and Visigothic times; it dominates the point where the Nela and the Jerea join the Ebro.

Nature
The Ebro makes its way through a narrow cut at the foot of the sierra of La Tesla, beside the crags of Tartalés de Cilla; on its slopes survives a centuries-old yew grove uncommon in the north of Burgos.
