What to see and do in Cillaperlata

Cillaperlata
Village
Cillaperlata is a municipality in northern Burgos, in the Las Merindades district, set on the right bank of the Ebro at the foot of the Sierra de la Llana, at 571 metres above sea level, with around thirty inhabitants across 16.82 square kilometres. It belonged to the Merindad de Cuesta-Urria and had as many as 147 inhabitants in the 19th century. Its 18th-century church of Nuestra Señora de Covadonga holds the oldest known carving of that Virgin, Romanesque and from the 12th century. The municipal area also preserves the ruins of the monastery of San Juan de la Hoz, documented since the 8th century, a medieval necropolis with more than 84 tombs carved into the rock, and the hermit caves of Covanuto and Cueva Grande, next to the town centre.
Monastery of San Juan de la Hoz
Monument
Ruins of one of the oldest monasteries documented in the lands of the county of Castile, situated in a gorge of the sierra de la Llana a little more than a kilometre from the town. The plan of the church is preserved, with a semicircular apse, and remains of columns and corbels.
Church of Nuestra Señora de Covadonga
Monument
Parish church of the modern period with a dedication unusual in Burgos. Inside it are kept Romanesque carvings of the 12th century from the neighbouring monastery of San Juan de la Hoz, among them a seated image of the Virgin with the Child.
Mountain range of la Llana y ribera del Ebro
Nature
The municipal district lies entirely within the natural park of Montes Obarenes-San Zadornil, declared in 2006. It divides between the vega of the Ebro and the limestone cliffs of the sierra de la Llana, pierced by cavities such as El Covanuto and the Cueva Grande, used as hermitages.
Pilgrimage of Nuestra Señora de Incinillas
Activity
Pilgrimage festival held on the Sunday nearest to 21 September at the hermitage of Incinillas, raised in a pine wood between Cillaperlata and Trespaderne. Tradition places there the so-called Batalla del Negro Día, from which the hermitage takes its second name.
The carving of Covadonga that was saved from the fire
Curiosity
In the 12th century two twin images of the Virgen de Covadonga were carved: one went to Asturias and the other to the monastery of San Juan de la Hoz. The Asturian one burned in the fire of 1777, so that the one preserved here is the oldest in existence of that dedication.
The donation of Sancho García
Historical milestone
The name of the place appears for the first time in 1011, when the Castilian count Sancho García donates it to the monastery of San Salvador de Oña with the formula Cella perllata, cum integritate. The place name goes back to the Latin cella, cell or cave.
Olla podrida
Food and drink
Winter stew characteristic of Las Merindades and of the whole province, made with red beans and products of the pig: chorizo, blood sausage, rib and belly pork. It is served separating the broth, the beans and the meats, so as to take each element on its own.
