What to see and do in Frías

Frías
Village
Frías, a city of barely 258 inhabitants perched on the hill of La Muela, above the river Ebro, was since Roman times a strategic passage between the Cantabrian coast and the plateau; its name, documented in the year 867, comes from Aguas Fridas, “cold” in Old Castilian. In 1202 Alfonso VIII granted it the Fuero de Logroño, which spurred its development and gave it a Jewish quarter, and in 1435 John II of Castile granted it the title of city. Eleven years later the king exchanged it for Peñafiel with Pedro Fernández de Velasco, Count of Haro, whose dealings with the people of Frías ended in a two-month siege in 1450 that is commemorated every year in the Fiesta del Capitán. It preserves its medieval layout, with half-timbered houses jutting overhead, the castle of the Velasco family and a bridge with a 14th-century tower for collecting the toll (pontazgo).
Waterfalls of Tobera
Nature
The river Molinar leaps in a succession of waterfalls as it crosses the gorge of Tobera, a hamlet of twenty-five residents in the municipal district of Frías where the water drove mills and fulling mills for centuries.
Hermitage of Santa María de la Hoz
Monument
A medieval church set almost at the exit of the defile of the Molinar, in Tobera, beside the wayside shrine and the bridges that cross the channel; the village also has a church dedicated to San Vicente Mártir.
