Merindad de Cuesta-Urria
Village
Merindad de Cuesta-Urria is a municipality in the Las Merindades comarca, in a flat area with hills at the foot of the sierra de la Tesla, with its capital at Nofuentes and 263 inhabitants spread across twenty-four localities. Nearly a quarter of its municipal area, some 2,810 hectares, forms part of the Sierra de la Tesla-Valdivielso Special Protection Area for Birds, where the griffon vulture, hen harrier, Egyptian vulture and red-billed chough breed. The Visigoths had already settled near Mijangos by around the 6th century, and in the 14th century the castle of Montealegre was built on the sierra de la Tesla to control the whole merindad, of which only remains survive today. The church of Cebolleros holds a 16th-century Renaissance altarpiece, recently restored, and its heritage also includes Romanesque churches, coats-of-arms mansions and the bridge of Mijangos.
