What to see and do in Rucandio

Rucandio
Village
Rucandio is a hamlet of 72 inhabitants in the Valle de las Caderechas, in the Burgos comarca of Bureba, which gives its name to the town council also formed by Herrera de Valdivielso, Hozabejas, Huéspeda, Madrid de las Caderechas and Ojeda, each with its own neighbourhood council. The valley, enclosed by rocky escarpments of Pyrenean oaks and resin pines, is home to fruit trees — cherry, apple, pear and peach — and vegetable gardens of leeks and beans; behind the church are preserved the cellars where chacolí, a wine typical of the comarca, is traditionally made. The church of Santa María Magdalena, with a 17th-century doorway and a bell-gable with large bells, crowns the hamlet. The surrounding area, protected by the Sierra de la Tesla-Valdivielso Special Protection Area for Birds, is a refuge for griffon vulture, Egyptian vulture, roe deer and wild boar.

Activity
In spring, the cherry and apple trees that carpet the slopes of the valley flower all at once and turn these villages into an excursion destination: the date varies each year according to whether the cold comes early or late.
