What to see and do in Piérnigas

Piérnigas
Village
Piérnigas is a hamlet of Burgos province with 43 inhabitants, in the judicial district of Briviesca, whose founding is documented on 26 August 1066, with the Cid Campeador among the witnesses to the agreement alongside the abbot of the monastery of San Salvador de Oña, who settled it under abbatial lordship until the 19th century. It absorbed the residents of the neighbouring, now depopulated, Villaverde, and its church was dedicated to San Cosme and San Damián. A little over a kilometre away stands the Romanesque hermitage of San Martín, from the 12th century, one of the best preserved in La Bureba among the six chosen for the quality of their Romanesque architecture, along with those of Rodilla, Navas de Bureba, Aguilar de Bureba, Valdazo, Lences and Castil de Lences.
