Aguilar de Bureba
Village
Aguilar de Bureba is a town in La Bureba, in the province of Burgos, with 46 inhabitants, a former crown town of the cuadrilla de Cameno, one of the seven into which the Merindad de Bureba was divided. Its church, dedicated to the Asunción de Nuestra Señora, is Romanesque and was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1983; it ranks among the comarca's outstanding churches. At the festival of San Guillermo, in late May, people play chapas, betting money on the toss of two old coins. Wheat farming remains the main activity, though many residents work in the industrial estate of neighbouring Briviesca; in the past, a clarete wine was also produced in cellars dug beneath the church mound, which today is barely made.
