What to see and do in Monasterio de Rodilla

Monasterio de Rodilla
Village
Monasterio de Rodilla, with 171 inhabitants, was called Tritium in Roman times, an Autrigones city founded on the Alto de Rodilla, in an elevated area of difficult access, mentioned in the Antonine Itinerary and today partly destroyed by the wind farms installed on its structures. The present name comes from an old medieval monastery, today the Romanesque hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Valle, a monument since 1931, situated in the Santa Marina quarter, upstream from the village, in a bucolic setting surrounded by mountains, at the foot of the massif where the remains stand of the castle that watched over the Brújula pass, through which the N-1 road divides the waters of the Duero and the Ebro.
The hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Valle
Monument
The hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Valle is a temple in ogival Romanesque style, with Byzantine influence, built on the ruins of the vanished monastery that gives it its name, in the district of Santa Marina, upstream from the village of Monasterio de Rodilla, in a spot surrounded by mountains. The original cenoby dates from the second half of the 12th century, around the year 1170; despite its age, it is well preserved. With three bays, a semicircular apse, decorative arcades and a square tower, it is considered one of the finest examples of Romanesque basilica preserved in Spain and a unique architectural example in the country for its style. It was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) on 3 June 1931.
The ruins of the castle on the crag
Monument
On a rocky outcrop there remain a pentagonal tower of some eight metres and stretches of wall of irregular slabs. Protected since 1949, the castle controlled the passage between the Bureba and the plain of Burgos.
The handover of the castle by Alfonso VIII
Historical milestone
Already cited in 1011 in the cartulary of Oña, the castle was handed over in 1170 by Alfonso VIII as part of a marriage settlement. In 1398 it passed to the Velasco, who incorporated it into their seigneurial patrimony.
